Ewshot 750 Banger Challenge: Epic Road Trip Raises Funds for Hospice Care

Seventeen vehicles, each purchased for no more than £750, are set to embark on an extraordinary adventure this spring to raise money for the local Hospice Care charity Phyllis Tuckwell. The Ewshot 750 Banger Challenge invites drivers to buy a car for £750 or less and join a 750-mile journey through England and Wales, creating a festival-like atmosphere with outrageously decorated cars.

Scenic Route and Festive Spirit

The route deliberately avoids motorways, instead favoring scenic routes, country lanes, and Welsh mountain passes, culminating at the legendary Farmer’s Dog, Jeremy Clarkson’s pub. Event organiser Brendan Cox remarked, “Some of our drivers have selected well-built, older vehicles with a reputation for reliability, while others seem to have deliberately chosen the quirkiest, most underdog machines they can find!” He added, “It’s a celebration of motoring mischief, camaraderie, and the undying spirit of adventure on four wheels – all for an important local cause.”

Detailed Itinerary of the Challenge

Drivers will depart from Ewshot early on April 16, heading west through the Cotswolds to Aberystwyth for an overnight stay. The second day takes them through Snowdonia, past Liverpool, and on to Morecambe Bay. On the third morning, they’ll travel to Beckfoot and Little Langdale, then down through Malham to Harrogate, and through Doncaster, Nottingham, and Melton Mowbray. The final day sees them heading south through Leicester, past Stratford-upon-Avon and Burford, before returning to Ewshot.

Supporting a Vital Local Cause

Brendan explained the choice to support Phyllis Tuckwell: “We chose to support Phyllis Tuckwell in recognition of the vital services it delivers to our local community. Many of us have had family members or friends who have benefited from the exceptional care they provide.” He shared a personal connection: “Personally, the mother of my two eldest children and both my parents-in-law spent their final days in the Hospice, and our entire family will be forever grateful for the compassion and support shown to us during such a challenging time.”

Community Appreciation and Impact

Sam West, community fundraiser at Phyllis Tuckwell, expressed gratitude: “A huge thank you to Brendan, all the organisers, and everyone who will be taking part in this fantastic fundraiser. We’re really looking forward to hearing the stories afterwards — and seeing the photos! It sounds like great fun, and we’re so grateful to them for choosing to support Phyllis Tuckwell.”

All funds raised will directly support the specialist hospice care provided by Phyllis Tuckwell for local patients and families dealing with advanced or terminal illnesses. The charity supports over 250 patients, relatives, and carers daily, but with the NHS/Government covering only about 25% of its costs, it must raise more than £25,000 every day to continue its essential work.
