Father's Marathon Mission for Daughter and Disabled Children's Charity
When Michael Dugdale tackles the legendary London Marathon this April, each stride will be fueled by a purpose far deeper than any personal record. He is running for his 20-year-old daughter Megan and for the transformative work of the Wooden Spoon charity that has profoundly impacted children with needs similar to hers.
Megan's Journey and the Power of Inclusive Play
Megan lives with Malan Syndrome, a rare genetic condition, and attended Park Community Academy and Woodlands School in Blackpool for her supported education. For children facing additional challenges, access to secure, stimulating outdoor environments and physical activities is crucial—not merely for health, but for building self-assurance, developmental growth, and pure happiness. This is why Wooden Spoon's assistance has been so significant to Michael and his family.
Through a generous £25,000 donation, the charity contributed to funding a Pirate Ship play area at Park Community Academy. This created a lively, inclusive space where children can safely play, learn, flourish, and experience joy. "Witnessing the children delight in that area was extraordinarily meaningful," Michael recalls. "Such facilities create a substantial impact. It transcends mere play; it's about providing opportunities, fostering confidence, and crafting precious moments of contentment."
A Health Scare That Sparked a Comeback
An enthusiastic runner in his younger years, Michael resumed the sport in 2019 but faced difficulties maintaining consistency as daily responsibilities and overexertion wore him down. Everything shifted dramatically following a severe health scare in August 2025. "That incident served as the essential wake-up call," he explained. "It prompted me to reevaluate my well-being and dedicate myself to sustainable changes. Undertaking the London Marathon seemed a potent method to achieve this while backing a cause deeply important to my family."
Ambitious Goals and Heartfelt Motivation
Michael aims to finish the marathon in under four hours, a personal target that mirrors both his athletic history and his resolve to restore his fitness. "I'm optimistic and truly relishing the challenge," Michael stated. "However, above all, this endeavor is for Megan and assisting other children like her. If I can aid Wooden Spoon in developing more initiatives akin to the Park Community Academy project, then every single mile will be immensely valuable."
His fundraising efforts through JustGiving seek to generate further support for Wooden Spoon's mission, emphasizing that each contribution helps create more inclusive, joyful spaces for children with additional needs across communities.
