The festive spirit was alive and well in Folkestone as the town's Rotary Club marked a remarkable milestone: half a century of taking Father Christmas on his sleigh through the community's streets. This beloved annual tradition sees members and volunteers collect donations from residents, funds that are entirely dedicated to supporting those facing financial hardship locally.
A Half-Century of Festive Generosity
For 50 consecutive years, the Rotary Club of Folkestone has organised this heart-warming event. Volunteers traverse residential areas, spreading cheer with Santa's visit while gathering contributions from the public. This year, despite widespread financial pressures, the community's response was described as outstanding.
All money raised is used to create essential festive support packages. The club purchases and assembles more than 130 food parcels for distribution to individuals and families struggling within the local area. Each parcel also contains toys, ensuring local children don't miss out on the joy of the season.
Bringing Cheer and Essential Support
The parcels are delivered directly to people identified as needy within Folkestone and the immediate vicinity. The initiative has been met with profound gratitude, with the Rotary team receiving numerous messages of thanks from touched recipients. Beyond this sleigh project, the club also supports various other local Christmas events focused on aiding the elderly, disabled, and disadvantaged.
Jerry Cook, President of the Folkestone Rotary Club, expressed his sincere appreciation. He thanked all the members, new corporate partners, and the many local volunteers who contributed to the effort. "Thankfully the weather was fair and it was so special to see so many children’s smiley faces and adults of course," he said.
Community Spirit in Action
Cook highlighted the significance of the funds raised this year. "The amount raised has been outstanding considering the financial challenges many are facing, which is testament to the generosity of all the local residents who gave so generously." He also extended thanks to specific local businesses that provided support: Tag Trees, The Folkestone Yacht Club, and ASDA.
Explaining the core motivation behind the event, President Cook referenced the Rotary motto, "Service above Self." "Our Christmas nights are very special to us... not only are we bringing cheer to everyone we see when we bring Santa round the town, the harbour or supermarkets, every penny we collect along the way is helping someone else in your local community," he stated.
Concluding with a festive message, Cook added, "Along with the members of the club, I wish you and your family a terrific 2026." The club continues its vital work, with more information available through their website for those wishing to learn more or donate to future campaigns.
