A fundraiser organised by a local sports club and a grieving family has raised £453 for the Hywel Dda University Health Board’s Smoking and Well-being Team.
The special event was held in memory of much-loved club member, Martyn Harries. Organisers hosted a quiz and raffle event at Carmarthen Bowling Club in St Peters, Carmarthen in April.
The evening brought together members, friends and family to celebrate Martyn’s life while supporting an important cause.
Grandson’s Idea Sparks Community Support
The idea for the fundraiser came from Martyn’s 14-year-old grandson, Charlie Harries, who wanted to honour his grandfather’s memory while also helping others who smoke. Martyn, who sadly passed away in February 2024, was a valued and well-loved member of the bowling club, and the evening served as a fitting tribute.
The money raised will go directly toward enhancing services for local patients, families and healthcare workers.
Health Charity Thanks Contributors
Tara Nickerson, fundraising manager, said: “We’d like to say a huge thank you to Carmarthen Bowling Club, Charlie and rest of the Harries family for choosing to support our charity in Martyn’s memory.
“The generous charitable donations we receive don’t replace NHS funding. Instead, they are used to provide items and activities above and beyond core NHS expenditure, such as more welcoming surroundings for patients, families and staff, and research into, and the development of, treatments.”
