St Catherine’s Hospice is calling for approximately 150 volunteers to support its annual Midnight Walk in Horsham, scheduled for Saturday, 6 June. Last year, 140 volunteers assisted over 650 walkers in raising £165,000 for the hospice, which provides end-of-life care and support to around 2,000 people each year across East Surrey and West Sussex. The event features four walking distances — 2, 7, 13, and 17 miles — and unites the community for a night of celebration, remembrance, and fundraising.
Volunteer Roles and Support
Volunteers play a crucial role in the event’s success. Key positions include route guides who direct walkers safely along the course and offer encouragement throughout the night. Others staff refreshment points to keep participants fuelled and hydrated. One returning volunteer couple, Ian and Mandy Agnew, expressed enthusiasm for participating again, citing the enjoyable atmosphere and community spirit. They described the experience as rewarding and filled with 'good humour' from both walkers and supporters.
Shift Details and How to Help
Volunteers are needed from 2pm through to 6am, with most shifts lasting around five hours, though any amount of time is welcomed. Those interested can apply online or contact the hospice volunteer team via email at volunteering@stch.org.uk or by phone at 01293 447361. Walk places are still available for those wishing to take part in the event itself.
