Preston Housebuilder Supports Chronic Pain Charity with £1,500 Donation

A Preston-based housebuilder, David Wilson Homes, has generously donated £1,500 to S.M.I.L.E Preston, a local charity dedicated to helping individuals living with chronic pain. The donation is set to significantly boost the charity's ability to provide essential services and support to its members.

About S.M.I.L.E Preston

S.M.I.L.E Preston, which stands for Self Motivation In Lasting Endorphins, was founded approximately 25 years ago by Dr Max Fryer, a doctor from the pain management department at the Royal Preston Hospital. The charity operates every Wednesday morning at Ingol Methodist Church, offering a range of activities designed to improve well-being.

These activities include exercise sessions, relaxation techniques, and various therapies such as Pilates, massages, chiropody, and Reiki. The group also organises speakers, trips, and social events to foster community among members facing similar health challenges.

Impact of the Donation

Victoria Castle, secretary at S.M.I.L.E Preston, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the donation. She stated, "We would like to acknowledge and most gracefully thank David Wilson Homes for its generous donation of £1,500 to our charity. The funding will make a massive impact on our charity."

The funds will be used to:

  • Replace and invest in new exercise equipment.
  • Purchase wellness devices like massage equipment.
  • Support the general running costs of the group.

Victoria added that the charity is fully inclusive and open to all, providing financial support to members in need. She highlighted the challenges faced by small local charities, noting that S.M.I.L.E Preston struggles to access grants and compete with larger national organisations for funding.

Community Engagement and Fundraising

To sustain its operations, S.M.I.L.E Preston runs a monthly stall in the restaurant of the Royal Preston Hospital on the last Friday of each month. This initiative helps raise funds for the charity and supports other hospital charities, such as Rosemere Cancer, through donations and event sponsorships.

Support from David Wilson Homes

Claire Jarvis, managing director at David Wilson Homes North West, commented on the donation, saying, "We are proud to support S.M.I.L.E Preston as it continues to support a large number of vulnerable people in the city. With this donation, we hope the charity can enhance its available equipment and continue to carry out such vital services."

This contribution underscores the importance of local business support in helping community-focused charities thrive, especially in areas like Preston where access to resources can be limited.
