Strictly Come Dancing and Gladiators favourite Jodie Ounsley has announced a poignant physical challenge to honour her late father, planning to finish the mountain hike he never completed.
A Daughter's Promise on the Yorkshire Peaks
Jodie, known as Fury on the hit BBC show Gladiators, will climb Pen-y-ghent in the Yorkshire Dales on Saturday, 11 April 2026. In an incredibly moving gesture, she will carry 56 kilograms up the mountain, representing each year of her father Phil's life. The former West Yorkshire Police inspector and world coal carrying champion died suddenly after collapsing on the same peak on Sunday, 30 November.
Phil Ounsley, aged 56, was a frequent walker of the Yorkshire Three Peaks, with Pen-y-ghent being a particular favourite. In a heartfelt social media post, Jodie explained the motivation behind her planned tribute, titled "In Dad’s Footsteps. Finishing the Climb." She stated the challenge is not about speed, but about "love, resilience and finishing something unfinished."
Carrying His Memory for a Vital Cause
Jodie's courageous decision comes shortly after she participated in the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special, filmed in the immediate aftermath of her father's passing. She described the upcoming climb as an important focus for her first year without him and a way to process her grief.
The challenge also serves a charitable purpose. Jodie is raising money for The Elizabeth Foundation, a charity that supports pre-school deaf children with speech and language development, while also aiding their families. The foundation has had a significant personal impact on Jodie and her family, making the fundraiser deeply meaningful.
"I’m raising money for The Elizabeth Foundation, an incredible charity that supports pre-school deaf children with speech / language and provides support to their families too," Jodie wrote. "They have had a huge impact on myself and our family, which makes it incredibly meaningful for me to give back."
An Outpouring of Support and Lasting Legacy
The announcement prompted an immediate wave of support from fans and colleagues. Strictly professional dancer Karen Hauer responded with a heart emoji, while fans praised Jodie's "pure courage" and described her as a "super human." Many expressed confidence that her father would be immensely proud.
Following his death, Jodie paid a powerful tribute to her "absolute hero," highlighting his constant encouragement and wholehearted love. Phil Ounsley, who also ran The Ings Luxury Cat Hotel in Thornhill with his family and was a keen rugby player, is clearly remembered as a beloved and active figure.
Jodie has invited the public to support her journey, whether through donations, joining the walk, or simply following her progress. As she prepares to literally carry her father's memory with her up the mountain, this tribute stands as a powerful testament to family, fortitude, and finishing what was started.
