Biggleswade Fundraisers Host Successful Kingfisher Ball for Sue Ryder

In February, a dedicated trio of fundraisers from Biggleswade organized their seventh annual Kingfisher Ball, raising an impressive £4,051 for Sue Ryder, a charity providing palliative care and bereavement support. The event, held at The Tithe Barn in Bedford, was spearheaded by sisters Rebecca Little (32) and Emma Little (35), along with family friend Gail Humberstone (35).

A Personal Tribute to a Loved One

The Kingfisher Ball is a heartfelt tribute to Rebecca and Emma's mother, who received care at Sue Ryder St John's Hospice in 2011 during her final days. Rebecca explained, "Our fundraising journey for Sue Ryder started small with a sponsored Santa Dash, where family and friends dressed up and ran 5k." Over the years, their efforts have expanded to include auctions, bag packing at supermarkets, and even virtual marathons during the pandemic.

Rebecca shared, "We called it the Kingfisher Ball because mum loved Kingfishers; she would spot them while walking the dog. It seemed like the perfect tribute to her." The event is typically held every couple of years, with the group also undertaking treks and other activities to support the cause.

Milestone Achievements and Community Support

This year's fundraising success brings the trio's total contributions to over £47,000 since they began in 2012. Rebecca noted, "People say how amazing it is to have raised so much money, but to us it's just what we do. We organize the events, hoping to raise a decent amount so more families can get the support they need." She emphasized that as long as the community continues to attend, they will keep hosting the ball.

The glittering evening featured a welcome drink, a sit-down meal, and engaging activities like a heads and tails game with a £1 donation, where the winner receives a bottle of champagne. Additionally, a raffle and auction were held, with top prizes including a weekend trip to Warsaw for 2026. The night concluded with two hours of dancing and music.

Positive Impact and Future Endeavors

Rebecca added, "It's a night for people to get dressed up and enjoy themselves. People always ask when the next one is, as it's something to look forward to – something a little bit different. It's really nice when we get positive feedback." Roisin Duggan, community fundraiser at Sue Ryder St John's Hospice, expressed gratitude, stating, "We rely heavily on the generosity of people like Rebecca, Emma, and Gail. The money they have raised helps us continue to be there when it matters, because no one should face death or grief alone."
