North Devon Hospice's Light Up a Life: Honouring Loved Ones This Christmas
Light Up a Life: Remember Loved Ones in Barnstaple

For many in North Devon, the festive season brings cherished memories of loved ones no longer here. A poignant community appeal offers a beautiful way to honour them this Christmas.

A Star in Memory of a Beloved Nannie

Lauren Eddie is among hundreds of local people taking part in North Devon Hospice's Light Up a Life appeal this year. She is remembering her beloved grandmother, Jill Eddie, known affectionately as 'Nannie'.

"In so many of my childhood memories, my nannie was at the centre of everything magical," Lauren shared. "From dancing together to sewing costumes and baking a special pink Barbie birthday cake, she poured love into every detail."

Last year, Jill was faced with a life-limiting illness, which she met with remarkable courage. In her final weeks, North Devon Hospice provided care and support that left a lasting impact on the entire family.

Compassionate Care That Holds Families Together

"They didn't just care for Nannie, they cared for all of us," Lauren explained. "The hospice team created an environment where she was comfortable and surrounded by love. Their compassion held our family together when everything felt overwhelming."

Lauren's story highlights the dual purpose of the Light Up a Life campaign: it offers a symbolic way for the community to remember someone special, while also raising crucial funds. Every donation made in memory helps the hospice care for local people facing life-limiting illnesses this Christmas.

How to Take Part in Light Up a Life

The appeal invites people to dedicate a star in honour of someone they miss. These stars are hung on special Christmas trees inside Barnstaple Pannier Market.

There will be a free Christmas concert to illuminate the trees on Thursday, December 18, at 6pm. The event will feature:

  • Live festive music
  • Food and drink
  • A stunning light show by Blackbeam Cinematic, transforming the market ceiling into a sky of stars

Lizzie Hanks, Head of Fundraising at North Devon Hospice, said: "There is something very special about writing a name on a star and seeing it shine alongside hundreds of others. It reminds us we're not alone in missing someone we love."

Creating a Community of Memory and Support

Sharing her story is Lauren's way of thanking the hospice and encouraging others to take part. "Their work makes moments of peace and connection possible for families like mine," she said.

You can dedicate a star online at northdevonhospice.org.uk/light or in person at the hospice's stand in Barnstaple Pannier Market during Thursday late-night shopping in the run-up to Christmas.

All dedicated stars will be displayed throughout the festive season, offering a powerful visual testament to the loved ones who remain in the hearts of the North Devon community.
