Man and Dog Embark on Epic 1,200-Mile Charity Walk Across the UK

Paul Watson, a resident of Pickwell on the Leicestershire and Rutland border, is setting off on an extraordinary journey with his loyal border collie, Moss. Together, they will walk 1,200 miles from John O'Groats to Land's End over the next two months, aiming to raise £2,000 for the Corner Meadow Animal Rehabilitation (CMAR). Their adventure begins this week and will traverse some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the United Kingdom.

A Scenic Route Through Iconic Countryside

The challenge will take Paul and Moss through a variety of stunning routes. Starting in Scotland, they will explore the peatlands of the Flow Country, then follow the Great Glen Way, West Highland Way, and Border Drove Way before crossing into England. From there, they will walk down the backbone of England via the Pennine Way, journey through the Midlands along the canal network, and descend through the Severn Valley.

Their path to the southwest and Land's End will include the Cotswolds Hills, Quantocks, Exmoor, and a final stretch along the Cornwall Coastal Path. If all goes according to plan, they hope to reach Land's End in mid-June, approximately sixty-four days after their start. Notably, Paul and Moss have planned their route to avoid roads as much as possible, prioritizing natural trails and scenic byways.

Background of the Walker and His Canine Companion

Paul is a lifelong walker who has explored many routes across the UK over the years, often accompanied by a faithful canine friend. Moss, a three-year-old border collie, brings youthful energy to the trek and is also a talented gun dog. He is part of a scent team at Meadow View Dog Paddock & Training, where Paul became involved with CMAR through the community there.

Paul shared his motivation for the walk, stating: "I have helped raise money over the years for good causes, and doing this one for Rutland-based CMAR gives every mile a deeper purpose. Since launching a JustGiving page, the support towards my target has been fantastic, and I hope to swell that figure over the coming weeks."

Supporting the Cause and Learning About CMAR

Paul and Moss can be supported through their JustGiving page, where donations can be made by searching for 'Support Corner Meadow Animal Rehabilitation'. They will also post regular updates on the CMAR Facebook page, 'Rescue Malis at Meadow View/Corner Meadow Animal Rehabilitation', allowing followers to track their progress and learn about other events and activities from CMAR.

Corner Meadow Animal Rehabilitation is a social enterprise established by members of Meadow View Training. It operates as a community benefit society with two key objectives:

  • To create a community where animals are loved, respected, and understood by sharing information, raising awareness, and providing practical advice through community events, school visits, and social media.
  • To ease the pain of animals left behind, especially mistreated dogs, by offering mental and physical rehabilitation, including ongoing medical care, behavioural training, and activities to keep them fit and happy.

This new group in Rutland is set to launch at the end of May 2026. CMAR is a Community Benefit Society and a member of Co-operative UK with the registration number M047026, based in Rutland.
