Leicestershire Man to Run Seven World Marathons for MND Charity
Man Runs Seven World Marathons for MND Charity

For most individuals, completing a single marathon in their lifetime would represent a monumental achievement. However, Leicestershire fundraiser Giles Ashton-Roberts is defying expectations by participating in seven of the world's most renowned marathons this year, all for a cause deeply personal to him.

A Marathon Challenge for a Vital Cause

In a remarkable two-week period during April, Giles, a resident of Melton Mowbray, is undertaking three iconic races. He recently completed the Paris Marathon, with the Boston and London Marathons swiftly following. His journey continues in August with the Sydney Marathon in Australia, before he heads to the New York Marathon in November. The challenge culminates with the Singapore Marathon in December and the Mumbai Marathon in January 2027.

Supporting His Mother and Raising Awareness

This extraordinary effort aims to generate crucial funds for the MND Association, inspired by his mother, Jenny, who is living with motor neurone disease. MND is a terminal neurological condition that impacts approximately 5,000 people in the UK at any given time.

Giles, who is employed by airport ground services company Swissport, shared his motivation. "I turn 50 this year, and instead of organizing a large celebration, I saw this as a perfect opportunity to embark on something truly different," he explained.

"My mum, who now resides in Germany, received her MND diagnosis around a decade ago after experiencing difficulties with her legs. She is now completely immobile and requires constant care and assistance."

A Personal Milestone and Global Mission

"After securing a place in the TCS New York City Marathon last year, the concept of a personal challenge to mark my 50th year simply expanded," Giles added. "It's an incredible way to commemorate this milestone by pushing my physical limits while simultaneously raising vital funds and awareness for the MND Association."

TCS, a partner of 14 prestigious global marathons and running events, is supporting Giles throughout his mission. Beyond ensuring his entry into all seven marathons, TCS will document his journey worldwide for a documentary scheduled for release in early 2027.

The Impact of the MND Association

The MND Association stands as the largest charity dedicated to motor neurone disease in the United Kingdom. It finances pioneering research into potential new treatments for MND while providing essential support to individuals with the disease, along with their families and caregivers.

Every day, six people in the UK are diagnosed with MND. The disease damages the nerves responsible for transmitting messages to the body's muscles, ultimately leaving individuals unable to speak, eat, or breathe independently.

Community Support and Hope

Alistair Laing, a relationship fundraiser at the MND Association, expressed profound gratitude. "Approximately 5,000 people in the UK are living with MND at any one time," he stated. "Individuals like Giles provide immense hope to those affected, and we are incredibly thankful for his dedication and support.

"This undertaking represents a formidable challenge, but the entire MND community will be cheering him on throughout every step of his journey."
