Jolene Saunders, a mother of two from Alltwalis, Carmarthenshire, has successfully completed a gruelling Hyrox fitness competition to raise funds for the Chemotherapy Day Unit at Glangwili Hospital. Her efforts brought in £800 for the unit and an equal amount for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Hyrox challenge details
The Hyrox event, held at the national stadium in Cardiff, is an indoor fitness race that tests speed and endurance. Participants complete eight one-kilometre runs, each followed by a demanding workout station involving rowing, heavy sled pushes, and throwing weighted wall balls. Saunders decided to take on the challenge to give back to the medical team that cared for her.
Gratitude from hospital staff
Jessica Michael, senior sister at the Chemotherapy Day Unit, expressed deep gratitude: "On behalf of the staff and patients at the Chemotherapy Day Unit at Glangwili Hospital, I would like to thank Jolene for taking on this challenge, resulting a very generous donation of £800." She added that the money would be used to improve the environment and patient care within the unit.
Charity's appreciation
Claire Rumble, fundraising officer for the local health charity, said: "It's great to see our fundraisers using popular sporting events like Hyrox to fundraise for their local NHS charity. Thank you so much, Jolene. We are so grateful for your support." She noted that charitable donations provide items and activities beyond core NHS expenditure, such as welcoming surroundings and the latest equipment.
