Mother Runs Half-Marathon for Hospice That Cared for Family

A dedicated mother from London is preparing to run a major half-marathon to raise vital funds for a Nottinghamshire hospice charity that cared for her husband's grandmother.

Inspired by Compassionate Care

Mel Scott-Avis was inspired to take on the 13.1-mile challenge for Beaumond House Hospice Care after seeing first-hand the incredible support the team provided to her family. The busy mother of two young children aims to raise £500 for the Newark-based charity, which offers specialist end-of-life care and support at home for patients.

Mel Scott-Avis said: “Beaumond House provided compassionate care, comfort and dignity, not only for Pat but for our whole family.”

She added: “At an incredibly difficult time, knowing she was being looked after by such caring and dedicated staff gave us reassurance and allowed us to focus on spending precious time together.”

She continued: “The support they offered helped ease some of the worry and uncertainty that families often face, and we will always be grateful for the kindness they showed throughout her care.”

Training Challenges with Two Young Children

Finding the time to prepare for the long-distance run has been a challenge for the dedicated fundraiser.

Mel commented: “I’ve always enjoyed setting myself a challenge, and a half-marathon felt like the perfect way to push myself while raising money for a cause that means so much to our family.”

She said: “I’ve done just one half-marathon before but, with two young children, the biggest challenge is finding the time to train.”

She added: “You’ll often find me out running in the park pushing one child in a buggy, and one child riding alongside on a bike!”

Event Details and Fundraising Goal

The popular Newark Half Marathon takes place on August 16, starting at Sconce and Devon Park and following a flat course suitable for all abilities.

The money raised by her impressive efforts will help the charity continue providing essential care services to patients across North Nottinghamshire.

Caroline Swindin, head of fundraising at Beaumond House, said: “We are hugely grateful to Mel for taking on this challenge in support of Beaumond House.”

She added: “We’re all rooting for her as she prepares to run for a cause that means so much to her and her family.”

She continued: “Our care services are only possible thanks to the generosity of supporters and fundraisers like Mel.”

She commented: “All funds raised go towards continuing to provide compassionate, personalised care to our local community when they need it most.”
