Bikers' £15k Boost Transforms Hospital Play Area for Children
Motorcycle group funds £15k hospital play area revamp

A dedicated Welsh motorcycle group has celebrated a quarter-century of support for local children's health services by funding a major £15,000 transformation of a hospital's outdoor play area.

Two Decades of Dedication on Two Wheels

The Pembrokeshire-based 3 Amigos and Dollies Motorcycle Group has been fundraising for the Hywel Dda University Health Board's children's services for an impressive 25 years. Their commitment is showcased through popular annual events like the Easter and Christmas toy runs, which attract hundreds of bikers and supporters to the cause each year.

This long-standing effort has now culminated in a significant upgrade to the outdoor play space at the Cilgerran children's ward in Glangwili Hospital. The funding provided through Hywel Dda Health Charities has enabled a complete overhaul of the area, designed to uplift young patients during their stay.

A Play Space Transformed

The comprehensive renovation includes a wide range of improvements aimed at both fun and functionality. The old graffiti wall has been freshly re-sprayed, and the area is now stocked with new toys and play equipment. A charming summer house provides shelter, while a moveable ramp ensures easier access for all. The project also addressed practical needs by adding much-needed storage space.

Demonstrating their hands-on commitment, members of the motorcycle group didn't just write a cheque. They volunteered their own time, picking up paint brushes and tools to help paint and update the space personally.

Vital Benefits for Young Patients

Paula Goode, service director for planned and specialist care, expressed profound gratitude for the group's support. She highlighted the critical role outdoor play has in a child's hospital experience.

"Outdoor play provides so many benefits for children on the ward," Goode said. "It reduces stress and anxiety and creates opportunities to meet and play with new friends who are going through similar situations. It's important for both the physical and mental health of our patients, so we couldn't be happier with the transformation."

Tobi Evans, a volunteer for the 3 Amigos and Dollies Motorcycle Group, reflected on the community spirit that made the project possible. "Because of the generosity of everyone who has donated, we are able to give thousands each year. We are always so humbled by the amount people give and we know it's thanks to them that we have made it to our 25th year," Evans stated.

The final word came from Katie Hancock, fundraising officer for Hywel Dda Health Charities, who said: "We can't thank the 3 Amigos and Dollies Motorcycle Group enough for their support for Cilgerran ward. You have put a smile on so many faces. Diolch yn fawr."

Hywel Dda Health Charities focuses on funding items and activities beyond core NHS budgets, aiming to make a real and lasting difference for patients and their families.
