Unpaid Carers Deserve Recognition and Support
During National Carers Week in June, led by Carers UK and local organisations, Elsie Blundell MP celebrated the work of unpaid adult and young carers. She emphasised that their dedication ensures millions are cared for at home rather than in institutions, describing caring as one of the most generous and selfless acts.
Challenges Faced by Carers
Blundell acknowledged that the reality of caring can be hard and difficult, and society has not always given carers the recognition they deserve. She noted the financial benefit to taxpayers from home care, which saves money while improving outcomes with love.
Meeting Local Carers in Heywood
As part of Carers Week, Blundell met with carers, staff, and volunteers from the Rochdale Carers Hub in Queens Park, Heywood. She described them as a lovely group sharing stories that could make you laugh and cry, and left wanting to help them.
Government Proposals for Carer Rights
Blundell stated that the Labour government is working to change the system, unlike the previous Tory government. She welcomed the government's consultation on new rights for unpaid carers, including paid time off and the right to request temporary leave during a crisis. These measures aim to provide job security and help carers balance work and caring responsibilities.
Blundell urged unpaid carers to contact her for details of the Carers Hub via email at elsie.blundell.mp@parliament.uk.
