A sponsored challenge that raises money for leading charity Diabetes UK returns this summer, and people in Birmingham are being invited to sign up. The One Million Step Challenge runs from July 1 to September 30 and involves completing an impressive one million steps over the three months, equivalent to around 11,000 steps a day.
The challenge is designed to boost people’s fitness and improve their mood, while raising money to support Diabetes UK’s vital work. The funds raised will support pioneering diabetes research that will bring us closer to the day where diabetes can do no harm.
The One Million Step Challenge allows people to take part wherever and however it suits them - whether it’s in their front room or local park, in the gym or in the garden, alone while listening to music, chatting with friends or stepping with colleagues.
TV Presenter Encourages Participation
Diabetes UK ambassador and television presenter Craig Rowe is encouraging people to take part in the challenge after completing it himself last year. Craig said: “Taking on the One Million Steps Challenge last year was a fantastic experience, and I found it incredibly rewarding. What kept me motivated was knowing that the money raised would help Diabetes UK support people affected by diabetes. I also involved my partner, friends and family, which not only helped me stay on track but gave us the chance to spend more quality time together. It may seem like a daunting goal at first, but if you focus on one day at a time and go at your own pace, you'll be surprised at how quickly the steps add up.”
Alternative Distances Available
In addition to the original One Million Step Challenge distance, there are two alternative distances to choose from. Participants can opt to take on the half million challenge – about 5,400 steps per day. More experienced walkers looking to push themselves further can choose to take on the 1.7 million step challenge – the equivalent of walking from Land’s End to John O’Groats.
Charity Official Comments
Peter Shorrick, head of Diabetes UK Midlands and East, said: “Walking is a fantastic way to get active and can be a great mood-booster too. By taking on the One Million Step Challenge this summer, you’ll be joining the thousands of others stepping towards a healthier you, all while raising vital funds that will support people living with diabetes. Every step you take and every pound you raise will help us fund research into new treatments, campaign for better care and provide vital support through our helpline.”
