Regional charity One YMCA recently hosted a gala night to mark 140 years of supporting vulnerable people in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire. Guests gathered at the Watford Colosseum to help raise thousands of pounds for people in need in local communities. Civic leaders joined corporate partners and supporters to reflect on the charity's long history in the town where it all began.
Charity's Origins and Mission
Originally formed as Watford and District YMCA, the charity supports people through domestic abuse, homelessness, sexual violence and mental health challenges. Chief executive Guy Foxell said: 'It was a fantastic evening and wonderful having so many of our charity’s supporters there to celebrate our 140th anniversary with us.' He added: 'The emphasis throughout the evening on our work to support young people particularly resonated with me having started my own career in youth work.'
Entertainment and Fundraising
Organisers were thrilled that Efa Foncette, a talented young singer and part of the Airplay and One YMCA family, performed three songs alongside violinist Oliver Mills. The charity would like to thank everyone that helped to make the event such a success, raising an incredible £17,480.60 through ticket sales, sponsorship and auctions. Organisers are now inviting members of the public to help them reach their £20,000 target by donating via the One YMCA website.
Upcoming Anniversary Events
One YMCA is celebrating being here for generations throughout 2026 and will be holding a special 140th anniversary thanksgiving service at St Mary’s in Watford on October 12 at 7.30pm.
