One YMCA Celebrates 140 Years of Community Support in Watford
One YMCA is proudly celebrating its 140th anniversary throughout 2026, marking a significant milestone for the charity that began as Watford and District YMCA in 1886. Originally established to offer prayer and spiritual guidance to young men in Watford, the organization has evolved into the largest YMCA in England and Wales, extending its support to people of all ages, backgrounds, and faiths, including those with no religious affiliation.
Expanding Services for Diverse Needs
Today, One YMCA provides crucial assistance to individuals facing a range of challenges, such as homelessness, domestic abuse, sexual violence, poor mental health, and financial difficulties. By pooling the expertise of its highly skilled frontline staff, the charity not only helps those in need within local communities but also works proactively to prevent the necessity for its services in the first place.
Guy Foxell, CEO of One YMCA, commented, "Although it's sad that our work is so necessary, we are better placed than ever to help even more people belong, contribute and thrive in body, mind and spirit. In this 140th year since our charity was formed, we are taking every opportunity to celebrate the incredible work that takes place every day to support our communities and the practical and prayerful support of so many that has enabled us to be here for generations."
Exciting Anniversary Events and Fundraising Initiatives
Plans are well underway for a series of celebratory events, with the charity eagerly inviting colleagues and supporters to participate in the coming weeks and months. A Thanksgiving Service is scheduled for Monday, October 12, at 7:30 pm at St Mary's Church in Watford, featuring guests from YMCAs around the globe.
Additionally, One YMCA has lined up several fundraising activities for this year, including:
- A team treasure hunt
- A golf day
- A fire walk
- A Gala evening
For the third time, the charity has partnered with other local organizations for the Dreams United: Stadium Sleepout, which took place at Watford FC's Vicarage Road stadium on Friday, February 27, raising awareness and funds for individuals experiencing homelessness in the area.
Sharing Stories and Getting Involved
One YMCA is encouraging local residents to share their personal stories of how the YMCA has helped them or someone they know. Those interested can contact the charity at feedback@oneymca.org to contribute their experiences.
As One YMCA continues its vital work, this anniversary year serves as a testament to its enduring commitment to fostering community well-being and support across Watford and beyond.
