A local hospice care charity is calling on green-fingered residents across West Surrey and North-East Hampshire to unlock their gardens this spring and summer to help fund its vital services.
Share Your Space, Support Vital Care
Phyllis Tuckwell, which provides specialist palliative and end-of-life care, is inviting registrations for its popular Open Gardens event. The initiative asks garden owners to open their private outdoor spaces to the public or to friends and family, charging a small entry fee to raise crucial funds.
The charity supports more than 250 patients, relatives, and carers every single day. However, with the NHS and Government funding covering only a quarter of its costs, it faces the enormous challenge of raising over £25,000 daily to continue its work with those facing advanced or terminal illnesses like cancer.
Every Garden Welcomed, Big or Small
Helena Burke, Community Fundraiser at Phyllis Tuckwell, emphasised that all gardens are of interest. "We're looking for unique and interesting gardens of all sizes to swing open their garden gates," she said. "Whether you have flower meadows and woodland streams, or small shrubs and pots of flowers, we would love you to join in."
Participants can choose to open to the wider local community or simply to a circle of friends. To boost fundraising further, hosts are also encouraged to sell refreshments or hold plant sales during their opening.
The event is once again kindly sponsored by Kebur Garden Materials.
How to Get Involved
The charity is keen to hear from anyone with a garden they think others would enjoy. They also suggest collaborating with neighbours or community groups to arrange a collective opening.
Those interested in taking part can find full details and register via the official website at www.pth.org.uk/open-gardens. Alternatively, you can email fundraising@pth.org.uk or call 01252 729446.
The appeal is particularly relevant to residents in the Farnham, Guildford, and Camberley areas of Surrey.
