Retired Postmaster Takes on 214 Wainwright Fells for Air Ambulance
Retired Postmaster Climbs 214 Wainwrights for Air Ambulance

A retired postmaster is preparing to climb all 214 Wainwright fells in the Lake District to support the UK’s air ambulance services. Martyn Culley, 65, began his trek on May 5 to raise money for the emergency teams that provide a lifeline in remote areas.

A Lifeline in Remote Areas

Martyn says: "These crews save lives every single day. They’re often the first to reach people in the hills, on remote paths or in places where traditional emergency access is difficult. Many of us love these landscapes, and when something goes wrong, the air ambulance is there in minutes. I wanted this challenge to help support the people who make that possible."

The funds will be donated to Air Ambulances UK to support the work of 21 air ambulance charities across the country. Martyn is already known for his incredible feats, having previously trekked across the country and raised nearly £30,000 for Mountain Rescue.

A Daunting Challenge

The Wainwrights are a famous collection of peaks that include some of the most difficult and steep terrain in the Lake District. This challenge will test Martyn’s physical and mental strength as he faces long days and unpredictable weather on the rugged ground.

Martyn continues: "It’s a huge physical and mental test. But I’ve always believed that if you’re going to take on something big, you might as well make it count for more than just yourself."

Local Hero Mission: Sponsorship from Smith Partnership

East Midlands and Staffordshire law firm, Smith Partnership, is sponsoring the walk to help Martyn reach his fundraising goal. James Johnson, managing partner commented: "Martyn’s dedication to taking on extraordinary challenges for such worthy causes is truly inspiring. Walking all 214 Wainwrights is a remarkable undertaking, and we are proud to be supporting him every step of the way. The air ambulance services do incredible, lifesaving work across some of our most remote and beautiful landscapes, and we are delighted that our sponsorship can play even a small part in helping Martyn raise vital funds for such a deserving cause. We wish him all the best of luck and a safe journey."

Public Support and How to Help

The walker hopes that the kindness of the public will help him push through the most difficult moments of the journey. Martyn says: "I was overwhelmed by people’s generosity. The messages, the donations, the kindness from strangers, it all kept me going. I’m hoping this challenge will inspire the same kind of support, because the air ambulance charities really do rely on it."

Supporters can keep up with his progress through social media or by visiting his online donation page. Martyn says: "Last time I learned that people are far more generous than we often give them credit for. I’m sure this challenge will be no different." He will be sharing updates throughout the walk, and supporters can follow his progress and donate via his fundraising page.

Future Plans

When asked about his plans for the future, the adventurer admits he is already looking towards his next goal. Martyn laughs: "Let me get through all 214 first. But knowing me, there’ll be something else on the horizon."
