A devoted senior care assistant has spoken of her pride after reaching an incredible milestone of 35 years of service at a vital children's hospice.
A Career Built on Compassion
Sandra Holmes began her remarkable journey with East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH) in 1990, just one year after the charity's Milton hospice first opened its doors in 1989. Over three and a half decades, she has provided care and support to countless children and their families during some of life's most challenging moments.
Her extraordinary dedication was celebrated recently with a special presentation. EACH chief executive Kevin Clements honoured Sandra with gifts, including a beautiful bouquet of flowers, in recognition of her long service.
"It doesn't feel like 35 years. In fact, my first day seems like yesterday," Sandra remarked. "It's amazing to think how many children and families I've met along the way. Every one of them is different and unique, and, at times, it can be a sad and challenging job. However, it's also incredibly rewarding and a real honour."
Walking Alongside Families
Sandra described her role as being on a profound journey with the families she supports. She has, in some cases, known children since they were toddlers, watching them grow until they transition to adult services at the age of 18.
"It's a real privilege that they allow me to become part of their lives, and it is something I truly value," she said, highlighting the deep bonds formed through her work.
Having been at the Milton hospice longer than many of its buildings, Sandra has witnessed immense change. Among her most memorable moments was meeting The Prince and Princess of Wales during their visit to the hospice in June 2022.
Growth, Adaptation, and Team Spirit
"As an organisation, EACH has grown enormously," Sandra continued. She credits walking her dogs as a key 'coping strategy' during more emotionally demanding times. "The hospice is a truly amazing place and, over the years, I feel I've developed alongside it, learning so many new skills."
Her roles have evolved, keeping her work fresh and engaging. In recent years, her focus has included working with young people and assisting them and their families with the transition to adult services.
"It's something I love and feel extremely passionate about. I also feel lucky to be part of such a great team here at Milton," Sandra added. "Everyone supports each other, and there's always someone to talk to if I have a problem or something to discuss. It's genuinely like one big family."
The story of Sandra's commitment underscores the lasting impact of dedicated hospice care staff in communities across Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.
