A beloved Sheffield charity is celebrating a major milestone after spending 50 years transforming the lives of local families. Since launching in 1976, the volunteer-led Sheffield Family Holiday Fund has given thousands of children and parents a chance to escape daily pressures.
How the charity works
The dedicated team works closely with a national holiday charity to ensure local families can enjoy a well-deserved break by the sea. Many of those supported are navigating incredibly tough times, including illness, disability, bereavement, domestic abuse, or homelessness.
Recent data shows that 62% of the families helped by the charity had never been on a holiday before. The impact of these short breaks is clear, with 93% of families reporting an improvement in their children’s mental health. Additionally, 80% of families stated that their relationships had grown much stronger after their time away.
Impact in numbers
Last year alone, the charity sent 221 people away for a break, including 113 children. Around 22% of this vital support went to young carers, while 19% helped families facing homelessness.
One local dad, Brad, was referred for a trip with his autistic daughter, Skyla, after a period of homelessness and a serious health diagnosis. The pair arrived in Skegness on Skyla’s eighth birthday for a wonderful weekend of swimming and arcade games. Brad said: "It was just good to see my daughter smiling after all the stress we’ve had to go through."
Charity leaders speak out
The charity relies on the immense generosity of local donors and historic charitable trusts to keep its work going. David Meadows, from the charity, said: "Reaching our 50th anniversary is a significant milestone, but it also highlights that our mission to provide a vital lifeline for Sheffield families facing adversity is as urgent now as it was in 1976. A holiday is not a luxury for a family in crisis; it is a proven intervention that repairs fractured relationships, boosts children's confidence, and improves mental health. I'd like to thank all of our supporters over the last 50 years who have made it possible for us to help thousands of Sheffield people to make memories together that will last a lifetime."
Rob Parkinson, from the partner charity, said: “We’re incredibly proud to work alongside the Sheffield Family Holiday Fund as it marks 50 years of impact. Together, we’re helping more families access time away that can strengthen relationships, improve wellbeing, and create lasting positive change.”
Support workers see benefits firsthand
Local support workers also see the incredible benefits of these free breaks first-hand. Helen Bolt, a family services manager, said: “Free short breaks provided by the Sheffield Family Holiday Fund are so valuable for the families we support, many of whom face significant barriers that prevent them from accessing a break independently. These include health challenges, limited finances and low confidence in researching and booking holidays. The impact of these holidays is profound.”
As the charity looks forward to the next 50 years, the need for local support remains as high as ever.
