Fundraisers in Sheffield are preparing for a night hike through the Peak District to support vulnerable communities facing poverty around the world. The walk, scheduled for Saturday, July 4, aims to raise money for Christian Aid, an international development agency.
Event Details and Route
The Sheffield Night Hike will cover a 15-kilometer (9-mile) route, starting and finishing at Hathersage Methodist Church. According to coordinator Dan Shaw, the walk begins at dusk and concludes around midnight, continuing a tradition that has spanned more than 50 years.
“I love seeing repeat walkers return and new walkers join us, year after year,” Shaw said. “Fifty-six walkers took part last year and we raised around £900.” The route follows the River Derwent, climbs Padley Gorge, traverses Longshaw Estate, descends through Hay Wood, and returns to Hathersage.
Impact of Fundraising
Shaw emphasized the importance of the cause: “When we give money to Christian Aid, we may not know the people we’re helping but we know about their needs, and we can trust that our support will make a difference in their lives. We can help create a world where everyone can live a full life, free from poverty.”
All proceeds will support Christian Aid projects run by local partners in countries worldwide. Between 2024 and 2025, the organization worked with partners to directly reach 4.1 million people through nearly 400 projects, including savings and loans associations, farming cooperatives, climate disaster risk training, and healthcare schemes.
How to Participate
The walk begins at Hathersage Methodist Church, Hope Valley, S32 1BB, with check-in from 7:30pm and the walk starting at 8pm. For more information on joining or supporting the walkers, visit the Sheffield Night Hike website. To learn more about Christian Aid’s work, visit their official site.
