A sister's heartfelt campaign for Teenage Cancer Trust has mobilised a city-wide fundraising effort after her sibling lost a 13-month battle with a rare bone cancer. Chelsie French is walking 26 miles every month to honour Rhiannon Morgan, who was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma—a cancer affecting bones and soft tissues. Rhiannon, described as the most kind-hearted, generous and loving person, died on New Year's Eve 2024.
Community Rallies Behind Fundraising Drive
After receiving permission from her mother, Sarah French, Chelsie launched the campaign to keep Rhiannon's memory alive while supporting young people facing cancer. The initiative has sparked widespread support across the city, with local residents, businesses and organisations joining in.
A charity disco and karaoke night is scheduled at The Red Lion on Stow Hill in Newport on Saturday, October 24. Landlord Craig Davies has been a steadfast supporter from the start, helping Chelsie map out and finalise plans. A medium night has also been arranged for what would have been Rhiannon's 28th birthday on Tuesday, November 10. The event sold out within a week of being announced.
Local Heroes Step Up
Cancer survivor Billy Davies is among the local residents backing the effort. Chelsie expressed gratitude for the phenomenal support from her parents, friends, colleagues and the wider community, thanking everyone for their immense kindness and generosity.
To boost the total, 12 charity boxes have been placed across local businesses and venues. Donation points are located at The Red Lion, The Ridgeway, Sippin' Tinnys, Handpost, Hogarths, Johns Meat Market, Twinz Fish Bar, Million Hairs, Baneswell Stores, Lyceum Tavern, Maindee Conservative Club, and Cab X.
Keeping Rhiannon's Memory Alive
Chelsie said: "This is all about keeping Rhiannon's memory alive while helping other young people and families affected by cancer. Every donation, no matter how small, means so much." Teenage Cancer Trust provides vital care and support for young people with cancer across the UK. The community is encouraged to support the ongoing fundraising by attending events, donating via the JustGiving page, or contributing to local collection boxes.
