Community Spin-a-thon Raises Over £2,700 for Brain Injury Charity in St Albans

A charity spin-a-thon held at Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre has successfully raised more than £2,700 for Headway Hertfordshire, with donations continuing to flow in after the event. The energetic fundraiser brought together over 80 cyclists of varying abilities for four hour-long sessions, all dedicated to supporting the vital work of the brain injury charity.

Event Held in Memory of Dedicated Trustee Marian Ferguson

This year's spin-a-thon carried special significance as it was organized in memory of Marian Ferguson, a committed trustee of Headway Hertfordshire and a beloved member of the Westminster Lodge community who passed away in December 2025. Marian was the driving force behind the annual fundraiser, inspired by her husband, Dr James Ferguson, a well-known St Albans GP who suffered severe brain injuries in a cycling accident.

Determined to assist others affected by similar challenges, Marian worked tirelessly to raise awareness and funds for the charity. Now in its fourth year, the event demonstrated strong local support, with participants joining one or more of the cycling sessions throughout the day.

Special Guests and Community Support Highlight the Day

Adding inspiration to the occasion was special guest Sian Bryce, a former GB triathlete who competed at the 2000 Summer Olympics. Although unable to participate in the cycling due to injury, she attended to support riders and the fundraising efforts. The event also welcomed Teresa Heritage, Mayor of the City and District of St Albans, underscoring the community's engagement.

Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre, managed by Everyone Active on behalf of St Albans City and District Council, expressed pride in continuing to support the charity in Marian's honour. Lesley Garner, general manager at the centre, stated: "We're incredibly grateful to everyone who took part, donated or helped make the day such a success. Marian meant so much to both the centre and Headway Hertfordshire, so it was very special to see the community come together in her memory."

Funds to Support Vital Services for Brain Injury Patients

Headway Hertfordshire provides essential services across the county for individuals living with brain injuries, along with their families and carers. The funds raised from the spin-a-thon will directly contribute to the charity's ongoing initiatives, enhancing support for those in need.

With more than £2,700 already collected and donations still arriving, the event has set a positive tone for future fundraising efforts. The community's involvement highlights the lasting impact of Marian Ferguson's dedication and the collective commitment to a meaningful cause.
