Two dedicated employees of the charity Carers in Hertfordshire have made a splash by successfully completing a sponsored swimathon, raising vital funds to support the organisation's crucial work.
Diving In for a Cause
Jane Christou from the administration team and Julie Hayes, the hub and volunteer co-ordinator, took on the aquatic challenge at the John Warner Sports Centre in Hoddesdon. The centre generously provided two lanes free of charge for the event. Although both women are regular swimmers at the centre, visiting two or three times a week, this was their first-ever attempt at a sponsored swim.
Exceeding All Goals
The dynamic duo set themselves an initial target of swimming at least 64.4 lengths – the equivalent of one mile – within a one-hour timeframe. They not only met this goal but surpassed it spectacularly, completing an impressive 70 lengths in just 50 minutes. Their efforts in the pool have been mirrored by tremendous generosity from sponsors, with the fundraiser surpassing £1,000 in donations so far.
All funds raised will directly support the free information, advice, and services that Carers in Hertfordshire provides. This support is essential for individuals of all ages across the county who provide unpaid care for a partner, relative, or friend with an illness, disability, or other care need. The charity also supports those whose caring role has ended within the last three years.
Inspired by First-Hand Experience
The idea for the fundraiser was conceived by Jane Christou, who has worked for the charity for five years. She explained her motivation: “Through working at the charity and as carers ourselves, we have seen and experienced the positive difference that access to the right help and advice can make.”
She added, “Taking part in the swimathon was a great way to challenge ourselves while raising money to help make sure carers are identified, supported, and heard. Thank you to everyone who cheered us on and sponsored us!”
Julie Hayes, an 11-year veteran of the charity, shared her delight at the event's success. “We were delighted with how the event went and that we exceeded our fundraising target. Swimming is something we both enjoy, so turning it into a challenge and supporting Carers in Hertfordshire during its 30th anniversary year, felt like the perfect fit.”
