The Sunshine Fund has an exciting week ahead as the deadline for the Sunshine Run 5k approaches, offering a final opportunity for those wishing to participate. The charity aims to break a record number of runners this year, currently close to 400 participants. The event features a flat and fast route suitable for runners of all abilities, with each participant receiving a Sunshine Run t-shirt and medal. The evening begins at 6pm and concludes by 8.30pm, allowing ample time to enjoy the England match afterwards. This 23rd annual charity run includes over 15 local business teams and individuals from across the region. Entries close promptly at 23.59 on Sunday, May 10, and can be made at https://bit.ly/sunshine-run.
Great North Run Spaces Nearly Gone
The charity has nearly sold out of guaranteed spaces for this year's Great North Run, with over 140 runners expected to represent the Sunshine Fund across the entire GNR weekend. This marks the highest number of participants in a long time, reflecting the charity's growing presence in 2026. As one of the longest-standing North East charities, every penny raised stays in the region, supporting local families with specialist equipment not available through the NHS. Donations are fully transparent, with clear information on how funds are used to help children with complex needs. Interested individuals can secure one of the last spaces by visiting www.thesunshinefund.org/gnr.
Kielder Trek Success
Last Friday, a group of 20 people completed a marathon trek in Kielder Forest to raise funds for children living with disabilities, additional needs, and terminal illnesses. The 26-mile route took 10 hours and 20 minutes to finish, including regular breaks. Participants included a team from Oak Engage, which raised over £1,000. The day experienced all four seasons, from a frosty start to scorching heat, followed by cloud and rain. Despite challenges like blisters and aches, the group supported each other with a strong sense of camaraderie. The trek was led by head of charity David Wilson, whose experience ensured a successful finish.
Fundraising and Thanks
The trek raised over £4,000 in total, with donations still coming in. This will make a real difference to local families. Last-minute donations can be made at https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/sunshine-trek. Special thanks go to Forestry England and Northumbrian Water for allowing use of Kielder Forest and reservoir, and to Apex Radio Systems for donating two-way radios for the year, which greatly assisted the trek.
