Sutton Coldfield's 'Best Charity Shop' Closure Date Confirmed Amid Local Pleas
Sutton's 'Best Charity Shop' Closure Date Confirmed

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) charity shop in Sutton Coldfield's Red Rose Centre, which locals have called the 'best' in the area, is set to close permanently in January 2027. The news was announced by the Royal Sutton Coldfield Business Improvement District on Facebook, sparking a desperate plea from heartbroken residents to save the store or relocate it.

Closure Announcement and BHF's Plans

The closure is part of a wider BHF strategy to close around 150 shops across the UK to maintain a sustainable retail network. According to the charity, about 90 stores will close by the end of March 2027, with the remainder shutting by March 2028. The BHF shop in the Red Rose Centre, a much-loved community hub for years, is among those affected.

The Facebook post from the Business Improvement District stated: "The British Heart Foundation shop in the Red Rose Centre is sadly due to close permanently in January 2027." It asked residents whether they would support a relocation to another premises in Sutton Coldfield town centre, encouraging comments to demonstrate local support.

Community Response and Campaign

Dozens of locals voiced their thoughts, with many calling the shop 'vital' to the community. Deborah Scrivens said: "We have supported the shop for the last 20 years, donating and buying. Sutton needs this store and BHF needs Sutton. I am sure it would be even better supported in a more prominent position, please don't let this necessary service be lost."

Nikita Elizabeth Evans praised the shop's staff and atmosphere: "It's a good charity to support. The staff are always helpful and polite and it's clean, tidy and has a mixture of new/second hand goods for sale at very reasonable prices. Always a pleasure to look around. Sutton Coldfield needs to support to relocate this charity business into a space in the Gracechurch Centre."

Other residents called for relocation to a more prominent location to boost footfall. Wendie Jo commented: "It's tucked away out of sight now that most of the centre has closed, a more prominent location could help boost sales for the shop and charity, and help the main centre to be more vibrant with BHF's signature colour scheme, and increased footfall. Definitely try to relocate and keep supporting this vital charity!"

Chris James added: "A relocation is a must, it's more than a shop for some; its a community, a way of living, connect with like minded people. The Erdington one thrives being on the main High Street."

BHF's Statement and Challenges

BHF chief executive Dr Charmaine Griffiths explained the difficult decision: "Our shops mean so much to our colleagues, brilliant volunteers and communities across the UK. They are places where people come together to donate, shop and volunteer, helping to make a real difference to lives affected by cardiovascular disease. We know this will be a difficult time for our dedicated colleagues and volunteers in affected stores and emphasise our deep appreciation and gratitude for all they have done for BHF and the communities they serve."

She added: "Like most retailers, we are facing an exceptionally challenging trading environment. Cardiovascular disease remains one of the UK's biggest killers and our priority is funding research to save lives. We must take the difficult step to close some of our shops to sustain retail's important contribution to funding BHF's groundbreaking research."

What's Next for Sutton Coldfield

The volunteers hope that the community's comments will demonstrate strong local support and persuade BHF to relocate to another premises in Sutton Coldfield town centre. The BHF shop's closure is a significant loss for the Red Rose Centre, which has seen many shops close in recent years. Residents are now rallying to ensure the charity maintains a presence in the town.
