The Dogs Trust rehoming centre in Loughborough has issued an urgent appeal for foster carers across the East Midlands, as it grapples with an unprecedented surge in dogs needing help.
Unprecedented Demand for Canine Care
The charity is facing immense pressure, receiving a staggering more than 800 enquiries each week from owners who can no longer care for their pets. This surge has created a critical need for temporary homes where dogs can stay until they are matched with their permanent families.
Foster carers provide a vital lifeline, offering temporary homes for periods ranging from a few days to several months. This arrangement provides a rewarding opportunity for individuals or families to offer love and comfort to a dog without the long-term commitment of ownership.
Specific Needs and Full Financial Support
The appeal is particularly focused on finding fosterers who can help with larger breeds or dogs with specific behavioural needs. Many of these dogs would thrive best as the only pet in a household, requiring a calm and understanding environment.
To remove any financial barriers for potential fosterers, the Dogs Trust covers all associated costs. This includes food, bedding, grooming, and any necessary veterinary treatment, ensuring carers can focus entirely on providing a safe and loving temporary home.
Dotty's Story: A St Bernard in Need of a Quiet Retreat
One dog currently benefiting from the foster programme is Dotty, a two-year-old St Bernard. Dotty is described as a dog who thrives in a quiet, rural environment and would be best suited to a home with older teenagers.
"Dotty loves lazy days and countryside walks, and would suit a home where she can settle in at her own pace," explained a centre spokesperson. Her case highlights how fostering not only gives dogs a chance to thrive in a home setting but also helps the charity better understand each dog's unique personality, making the eventual transition to a forever home much smoother.
A Vital Service for Dogs in Crisis
Celine Di Crocco, Rehoming Centre Manager at Dogs Trust Loughborough, emphasised the critical role foster carers play. "With so many dogs needing our help right now, foster carers are absolutely vital," she said.
"By opening your home temporarily, you give a dog safety, comfort, and love when they need it most, while simultaneously freeing up essential space for other dogs waiting in our centres."
