A Southwell resident has helped raise hundreds of pounds for a local hospital charity in memory of a well-loved teacher who lost her battle with blood cancer. The money was generated through the online sale of a large collection of vintage clothing from European boutiques.
Fundraising Through Vinted
A close family friend accumulated £300 by selling the late woman's wardrobe on the digital marketplace app Vinted. The total sum will be matched by the Nottingham University Hospitals Charity to support people receiving treatment at a local medical facility. The funds will be specifically used to improve patient and family care within the specialist haematology department. The medical team had looked after the popular resident during her long illness over a number of years.
The Vintage Collection
The extensive clothing collection included multiple boxes of outfits from fashion boutiques in Brussels, Paris, and Rome. The various garments dated back across the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.
Suzannah Starkey, family friend, said: "It was a pleasure and an adventure to find new homes from all over the country for Michele’s collection."
She added: "I became practised at photographing Michele’s clothes on my dressmaker’s mannequin, then folding and wrapping in tissue and popping in the post. It got quite addictive!"
Community Impact
The late resident was known to many local people in the community because she taught French in the town for many years. Her husband of 30 years, Captain John Hanmer, supported the charity initiative alongside his family.
Hospital representatives have expressed their deep gratitude to the local family for their generous financial contribution. The money will help to enhance the hospital experience for future cancer patients and their relatives.
