A humanitarian from Walsall, who was part of a flotilla attempting to deliver aid to Gaza, has reportedly been kidnapped by Israeli forces. The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) claims that Sijaad Hussain, aged 55, was among approximately 180 individuals detained by Israel in the early hours of 30 April.
Details of the Incident
The vessels were in international waters off the coast of Greece, over 600 miles from Gaza, when they were intercepted. The GSF has condemned the action as 'piracy and entirely illegal' under international law. A spokesperson for the flotilla stated that armed Israeli soldiers boarded the vessels after ordering them to change course, warning that proceeding to Gaza 'places your safety at risk'. Communications with several boats then cut out, and participants, including Hussain, were taken.
Background of Sijaad Hussain
Hussain, an accountant from the Chuckery area of Walsall, had previously participated in an unsuccessful flotilla in September 2024, which was intercepted by Israeli officials. Undeterred, he joined this second mission, which set off just over two weeks ago. When asked earlier about the dangers, he said: 'We're a peaceful movement on a peaceful humanitarian mission. So it should not be the case that we should fear death.'
International Reactions
Israel maintains that its operations comply with international law. A spokesperson for the Israeli government explained that early action was required due to the large number of vessels and the risk of escalation. They claimed the operation was carried out peacefully, without casualties, and that an initial inspection revealed materials suspected to be drugs and contraceptives. The individuals were to be disembarked on a Greek beach in coordination with the Greek government.
The GSF has released CCTV footage of the interception and continues to demand the release of all detainees.
Local Response
In response to the incident, the Walsall Kobar Friendship Association has organized a protest. The demonstration is scheduled for 5pm today at The Crossing, Darwall Street, Walsall, to show solidarity with Hussain and call for his safe return.
