University of Derby Civic Awards Return to Honor Unsung Heroes
Derby Civic Awards Return for Third Year

The University of Derby Civic Awards are returning for a third year, shining a spotlight on the unsung heroes making a real difference across Derby and Derbyshire. The awards celebrate community groups, charities, schools, and businesses that contribute to the region's strength and connection.

The spectacular ceremony will take place on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at Derby Theatre. Residents have until midday on Thursday, June 4, to submit their nominations before the selection panel reviews the entries.

Award Categories

The exciting award categories include Civic Hero, Civic and Community Leader of the Year, the Lifelong Learning Award, and the Intergenerational Volunteer Award. Last year, fundraising champion Rachel Morris received the Civic Hero Award after helping raise more than £65,000 for worthy causes. Inspirational firefighter David Walsh was also honored for his transformative work helping young people access sports across the county.

Commitment to the Region

The university remains deeply committed to supporting the long-term success, prosperity, and happiness of families and organizations across the region. Anyone who knows someone deserving of recognition can find out more and submit a nomination online through the university website.

Professor Rhiannon Jones from the University of Derby said: “The Civic Awards are an opportunity to celebrate remarkable people and organizations across our city and county who help to create stronger, more connected communities. Every year we are inspired by the dedication and compassion shown by our nominees, and we encourage as many people as possible to put forward those making a real difference.”

Professor Keith McLay added: “We are honored to be able to recognize the exceptional people and organizations whose commitment continues to positively impact and strengthen our region at the Civic Awards. As the only university serving both the city and county, we are committed to supporting the long-term success and prosperity of our region and its communities, organizations, businesses, and individuals. It is a pleasure to be hosting the awards at Derby Theatre this year, and we look forward to an evening of celebration and much-deserved recognition.”
