Rossendale Mayor Reflects on Busy Month of Community Events
Rossendale Mayor's Busy Month of Community Events

It has been another busy month for the Mayor of Rossendale, with a variety of events attended as the term of office draws to a close.

School Visits and Easter Celebrations

On Tuesday, March 25, the Mayor attended All Saints Roman Catholic High School's Welcome Mass to commemorate the opening of the new school buildings. The mass was conducted by Bishop John Arnold, with singing from the school choir. Afterwards, a tour of the new school showcased the fantastic facilities. The Mayor remarked, "We are lucky to have this investment in Rossendale, and I know it will improve teaching and learning for our young people."

On Friday, March 27, the Mayor and consort Jackie visited Water Primary School to judge their Easter egg competition. It was a difficult task picking the winners given the effort each child had put into their creations. Well done to everyone who took part. They also chatted with Year 6 pupils about the role of the Mayor, fielding some very insightful questions.

Dansworks Show and Easter Fair

On Sunday, March 29, the Mayor and Jackie attended the Dansworks Show at Burnley Mechanics. Performers from all age groups were fantastic, displaying talent and dedication. Congratulations to all involved, including students, teachers, supporters, and parents who made the show possible.

On Good Friday, the Mayor attended the Easter Fair at Whitewell Bottom Community Centre. There was a fantastic tombola, raffle, and sale of excellent works by the craft group. The Mayor had the honour of setting off the Duck Race, and despite the weather holding, was glad not to have to retrieve the ducks from the river. More than £600 was raised—well done everyone.

Visits to Rossendale Hospice and Charity Events

The following Friday, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor Councillor Liz McInnes visited Rossendale Hospice to meet staff and clients and learn about the services offered. They saw the treatment rooms for complementary therapies, a new bath for relaxation with aromatherapy oils, and the wellbeing room where groups meet for activities. The dementia support group was in session, and over tea and cake, the Mayor heard how vital the group is to users and their families. The Hospice receives no government funding and costs over £1.1 million annually to provide free services. Many are unaware of the services available, and staff are keen to spread the word to help more people in need.

On April 11, the Mayor attended the New 2 You event at the ABD Centre. Thanks to Councillor Judith Driver for organising, a fantastic £400 was raised for the Mayor's Charities. Thanks to all who donated or bought clothes and raffle tickets. The Mayor also took five large bags of unsold clothes to Carers Link in Haslingden, one of the Mayoral charities, to be sold for funds. A Gift Aid declaration was signed to generate an extra 25% for the charity.

Tree Planting, Quiz Night, and Bus Launch

On Wednesday, April 15, the Mayor enjoyed a day at Astley Park with guest Councillor Judith Driver for the Mayor of Chorley's Commemorative Tree Planting. A brisk walk through the beautiful park culminated in planting a young oak tree, followed by lunch at the Hall. After lunch, a tour of the walled garden was cut short by rain. In the evening, the Mayor and Jackie attended the Rossendale Rotary Quiz Night in aid of GAND Aid. A great evening of fun, food, and company raised money for a fantastic charity. Their team answered all 15 questions correctly but lost on a tiebreaker. Thanks to Councillor Marilyn Procter and all organisers.

On Thursday, April 16, the Mayor and Jackie were invited to Rawtenstall Bus Station by Blackburn Bus Company to launch new low-carbon emission buses on the 464 service between Accrington, Haslingden, Rawtenstall, Bacup, and Rochdale. The 464 is a historic route, first registered in 1928, and has been a lifeline for over a century, carrying more than 1.5 million passengers annually. The new single-decker buses look fantastic.

Music by Candlelight and Honorary Townsman

On April 17, the Mayor and Jackie enjoyed the Mayor of Ribble Valley's Music by Candlelight fundraiser in Clitheroe. The church looked beautiful with candles lit, and the music was amazing, featuring talented performers. Some singers were recognised as members of the Rossendale Male Voice Choir. Well done to all involved.

The following evening, the Mayor and Jackie joined the celebration for local resident Marilyn Jones, who was bestowed the honour of Honorary Townsman of Whitworth. The first such honour was awarded in 1980, and Marilyn is only the 13th recipient. She is the backbone of The Lighthouse Community Foodshare and thoroughly deserved the award. A lovely evening celebrating a wonderful lady.

St. George's Day Parade

On Sunday, the Mayor and Jackie attended the Rossendale Scout Group's St. George's Day Parade in Stubbylee and Moorlands Park. It was lovely to see young people in the Scout movement, hear about their achievements over the past 12 months, and recognise their commitment and resilience. Well done also to all leaders and volunteers who support these groups. "These young people are our future, and you are helping to shape them," the Mayor said.
