Skipton Repair Café Marks First Birthday with 800 Items Repaired and 12,122kg CO2 Saved
Skipton Repair Café Celebrates First Birthday Milestone

A beloved Skipton community project is celebrating a major milestone this month. The popular Share Skipton Repair Café is marking its first birthday after a year of helping local people save money and learn new skills. The monthly event has become a regular fixture in the community by bringing together skilled volunteers and residents to give broken items a new lease of life.

Over 800 Items Repaired in First Year

Over the past 12 months, volunteers have successfully repaired more than 800 items. These fixes ranged from household appliances and furniture to jewellery, textiles, tools and treasured family heirlooms. The environmental impact has been significant for the local area. Those 800 repaired items represent an estimated 12,122kg of carbon dioxide emissions saved. This is equivalent to almost 74,000 air miles, or flying around the world three times.

Volunteer Coordinator Praises Community Effort

Morgan Spicer, Volunteer Coordinator at Share Skipton, said: "We're incredibly proud to be celebrating one year of Repair Cafés in Skipton. What started as an idea to help people repair rather than replace has grown into a thriving community event. On average, we've repaired 73 items at every session, saving hundreds of items from landfill and helping people hold onto possessions that matter to them. None of this would be possible without our fantastic volunteers, whose generosity, expertise and enthusiasm make the Repair Café such a welcoming and successful community project."

Memorable Repairs and Volunteer Opportunities

Among the many memorable repairs over the past year have been a barber's pole, now spinning proudly once again outside a local business. Another success story includes a nearly 200-year-old family typewriter that has been restored to working order. Each Repair Café relies on around 25 volunteers who generously donate their time and skills. Share Skipton is always looking for new volunteers and welcomes anyone interested in getting involved. No previous experience is required, and excellent training and support are available. People interested in volunteering can register their interest via the Share Skipton website.
