10,054 Drivers Hit with Penalty Points for Unroadworthy Vehicles in 2025
10,054 Drivers Get Points for Unroadworthy Cars in 2025

The RAC has revealed that 10,054 motorists were issued penalty point endorsements on their driving licences in 2025 due to their vehicles being deemed unroadworthy. This marks a decrease of 3,055 endorsements compared to the 13,109 recorded in 2024, though experts caution that the drop could reflect either better vehicle maintenance or fewer traffic enforcement officers on the roads.

Defective Tyres Lead the Way

Driving a vehicle with defective tyres was the primary reason for receiving points last year, with 6,670 drivers penalised. Offenders also face fines of up to £2,500 per tyre. An additional 3,384 endorsements were handed out for other roadworthiness issues, such as defective steering or brakes.

Expert Warning on Road Safety

RAC Servicing and Repair Mechanic of the Year Jack Halstead commented: “Far too many vehicles are unfit for the roads, posing a danger not only to the driver, but to other road users as well. Having bald tyres drastically reduces grip, greatly increases stopping distances, and raises the risk of blowouts. But whether it’s tyres, brakes, steering or something else, every mechanical component in a vehicle plays a critical role.”

Halstead added: “And this is likely to be just the tip of the iceberg; with fewer police traffic units, it’s likely more offenders are evading officers and putting themselves and others at risk.”

Tips to Avoid Penalties

He noted that some drivers may have accidentally let their car maintenance slip, but this can be avoided by using free apps like myRAC, which send reminders to check key components such as tyres and flag important dates like MOT, service, tax, and insurance renewal. The RAC also offers nationwide mobile mechanics who can carry out repairs and services at a driver's home or workplace.
