Granada, a popular tourist destination in southern Spain, was hit by a reported 5.0 magnitude earthquake just after 1 am on August 15, forcing people to flee buildings. The quake caused damage in the Alhendín area, with cars smashed by debris and cracks appearing in the road. No injuries have been reported, but some people were rescued from buildings.
Details of the Earthquake
According to the National Geographic Institute, the earthquake occurred at exactly 1:04 am with a depth of 2 km, followed by another at 10 km depth. The epicenter was located at latitude 37.1147 degrees and longitude -3.6618 degrees. This came seven hours after an initial earthquake of magnitude 3.7 with an epicentre in the town of La Zubia. Around 40 tremors were reported in the area during the early hours.
The city of Granada sits at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains and is known for its architectural beauty. The Andalusian regional government has declared an emergency situation in the area.

Antonio Sanz Cabello, Vice-president of the Andalusian regional government, issued a warning to residents, telling them to "stay calm." In a post on X, he said: "If you're in Granada, you've felt the earthquake, you're okay, and your home shows no damage, stay calm and avoid entering and exiting buildings unnecessarily. On the street, stay away from facades, cornices, balconies, walls, and other elements that could fall."
María Jesús Montero, General Secretary of the PSOE party in Andalusia, urged people to take care following the damage. She said: "Take care following the 5-magnitude earthquake and the numerous tremors that have occurred in Granada, which have also been felt in other provinces. Our thoughts are with those affected and please, caution regarding the damage caused to buildings and streets."
