The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has issued an urgent warning to consumers across the United Kingdom following a recall of four products sold via the online retail giant Amazon. The alert, published on the official government website, highlights serious risks of fire and choking associated with the items.
Electrical Faults Pose Significant Fire Danger
Three of the recalled products are electrical goods that have been deemed a significant fire risk. Authorities have identified critical defects, including wiring issues and plugs that do not conform to mandatory UK safety standards.
One specific item named is an LED Table Lamp sold on Amazon. The OPSS states that the plug face fails to meet the dimensional requirements of British Standard BS1362. This fault means it cannot form a secure connection with a standard UK socket. Furthermore, the internal circuits lack sufficient creepage and clearance distances.
The product presents a serious risk of fire because the plug face does not meet the dimensional requirements, the OPSS warning explains. In the event of a power surge or product fault, the defective plug could overheat or even explode. The lamp also fails to meet the requirements of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 and the Plugs and Sockets (Safety) Regulations 1994.
Baby Product Recalled as Choking Hazard
The fourth item subject to the recall is a set of baby dummy clips. Safety inspectors have classified this product as presenting a serious risk of choking for young children.
The official notice details that the clips contain small parts which can detach or break off during normal, foreseeable use. These parts are small enough to fit entirely within a standard small parts cylinder, which is the test gauge used to identify choking hazards.
These small parts pose a choking risk to young children, particularly those under 36 months of age who are prone to putting objects in their mouths, the warning states. The product has been judged non-compliant with the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. As a result, its import has been blocked at the border and Amazon has removed the listing from its marketplace.
Implications and Consumer Advice
This coordinated action between the OPSS and Amazon underscores the ongoing vigilance required for product safety in online marketplaces. The recalls, announced on 16 January 2026, serve as a crucial reminder for UK households to check any recently purchased items.
Consumers who believe they may own one of the affected products should immediately stop using it. They should contact Amazon directly for information on how to return the item and obtain a full refund. The government advises the public to regularly check the official Product Safety Database for the latest recall information to protect their homes and families.
