Edgbaston Man Receives Seven-Year Sentence for Historic Child Sexual Offences
A man from Birmingham has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment for sexually assaulting and raping a young boy more than fifteen years ago. Jerome Blackburn, aged 33 and residing in the Ridgeway area of Edgbaston, was found guilty following a trial at Birmingham Crown Court in December last year.
Victim's Courage Leads to Conviction After Years
The victim, who is now in his twenties, first contacted West Midlands Police in 2020 to report allegations against Blackburn dating back to 2008. Specialist officers from the force conducted a thorough investigation into the series of assaults that occurred when the victim was under thirteen years old.
Despite Blackburn denying all charges, the jury found him guilty on multiple counts including:
- Two counts of rape of a child under thirteen
- Two counts of sexual assault on a child under thirteen
The formal sentencing took place on Tuesday, January 20th, where Blackburn received his seven-year prison term alongside a lifetime requirement to be listed on the sex offenders register.
Police Praise Victim's Bravery and Commitment to Justice
Investigating officer PC Connor Jones commended the victim's exceptional courage throughout the legal process. "The man who was abused as a child has shown tremendous courage and bravery in reporting to us what happened to him," stated PC Jones.
"Regardless of the time that has passed since it happened, and the subsequent legal process, his bravery in speaking to us has resulted in his abuser being sent to prison. Specialist officers have been supporting him throughout this process, and we are all pleased to see justice has been served."
West Midlands Police reinforced their commitment to investigating all reports of sexual violence, regardless of when the offences occurred. The force emphasised that they take every allegation seriously and provide specialist support to victims throughout any investigation.
"We understand how difficult it can be to speak out, but we are always here for you and ready to listen – and we will put your wishes at the centre of what we do," added a police spokesperson.
This case demonstrates the police's dedication to pursuing justice for historic sexual offences and their ongoing support for victims who come forward, even many years after traumatic events have occurred.
