Martin Lloyd, a 39-year-old man described by police as a 'dangerous individual', has been jailed for 25 years at Birmingham Crown Court after being convicted of a 'campaign of violence' against a woman. The sentence, handed down on Monday, September 14, includes 19 years in custody followed by six years on extended licence.
Lloyd's victim suffered a broken nose and leg injuries during attacks that involved a baseball bat, chains and a machete. The court heard how Lloyd also raped the woman 48 hours after she had undergone life-changing surgery, and raped her again during another violent episode that left a footprint on her face.
Convictions and Investigation
Lloyd was convicted of three counts of rape, two counts of actual bodily harm, and using controlling and coercive behaviour. The woman, who managed to escape from Lloyd, contacted police in October last year. An investigation was launched after she disclosed 'years of abuse' to officers, leading to Lloyd's arrest and subsequent charges.
A judge at Birmingham Crown Court described Lloyd's offending as a 'campaign of violence' when passing the 25-year sentence.
Police Response and Victim Support
Following the sentencing, DC Stephen Dunford, from West Midlands Police's adult abuse investigation team, said: "Domestic abuse doesn't go unnoticed and sometimes the victim is the last person to see that they are a victim."
DC Dunford added: "In this case, professional agencies had a history of records that, once the victim felt strong enough to approach police, could be used alongside her evidence to prove Lloyd's conduct beyond any doubt. Lloyd is a dangerous individual, with a long history of domestic abuse convictions against multiple women, and he has never shown any remorse for his actions."
West Midlands Police confirmed that the woman has been provided with support since she reported the abuse. DC Dunford commended her bravery, stating: "We have provided the woman with support since she reported the abuse, and we commend her bravery in coming forward to share about her horrifying experiences."
