Elliot Brown, 41, from Alum Rock, has admitted two counts of assaulting an emergency worker at Birmingham Magistrates' Court. The charges relate to an incident on May 8 outside Heartlands Hospital, where Brown attacked two paramedics after being told to stop smoking near oxygen canisters in the ambulance bay.
Attack unfolded after cigarette removed
The court heard that Brown, who was being treated for a head injury at the time, reacted violently when a paramedic removed a cigarette from his mouth. The situation escalated quickly, with Brown punching one paramedic in the mouth and injuring a second paramedic's jaw when they attempted to intervene.
The presence of oxygen canisters in the vicinity made the smoking particularly hazardous. The magistrate emphasised the severity of the risk, telling Brown: "You could have killed people" and warning that "if that cigarette had landed near oxygen cannisters, this could have killed people."
Court hears of alcohol and drug support
During the hearing, Brown's defence noted that he "drinks to excess" and is currently receiving weekly support from a drug and alcohol service. The court acknowledged this context but did not diminish the seriousness of the offences against the emergency workers.
The case has been adjourned to allow for the preparation of a pre-sentence report. Brown remains on unconditional bail until his sentencing hearing, which is scheduled for November 9.
