Birmingham households are being urged to place a bowl of water in their gardens to assist wildlife during the upcoming heatwave. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has forecast temperatures reaching 31°C from Friday, June 19, through Tuesday, June 23.
Heatwave Alerts Issued
The UKHSA has activated amber heat-health alerts for parts of the country, while the West Midlands is under a yellow alert. The Met Office predicts peak temperatures of 31°C on Monday, June 22, marking the height of the heatwave in Birmingham.
Advice for Wildlife and Pets
The Met Office advises residents to "spare a thought for wild animals" and keep bowls of water available for birds, hedgehogs, and other wildlife. Pet owners should watch for signs of heatstroke, including heavy panting, restlessness, and lack of coordination. If concerns arise, contact a veterinarian immediately.
Keeping Your Home Cool
Households are recommended to open windows on the shady side of the home and close those on the sunny side. Before bedtime, open all windows to create a through breeze. Avoid sunbathing between 11am and 3pm when the heat is most intense; instead, seek shade and take advantage of cooler mornings and evenings for outdoor activities.
Clothing and Hydration
The BBC weather team suggests wearing light-coloured, loose garments made of breathable materials like cotton and linen to stay cool. The NHS recommends drinking six to eight glasses of water daily, with increased intake during hot weather due to sweating.
Protecting Vulnerable Groups
Babies and young children should be kept in the shade, especially between 11am and 3pm. Use a parasol on pushchairs instead of blankets or towels to ensure proper airflow. Ensure pets have access to plenty of water, a well-ventilated space, and shade for resting.
