Tommy-John Mustafa, a 25-year-old from Broxtowe, has been jailed for six-and-a-half years after he lost control of his modified Toyota GT86 at 85mph and ploughed into three young men on the A52 Derby Road in Nottingham. The collision occurred in the early hours of June 22, 2025, while a 30mph speed limit was in place due to roadworks.
Crash and Immediate Aftermath
Mustafa mounted the pavement as he took a right-hand bend, striking the group who were on their way home from a night out. Two of the victims had been riding council-rented e-bikes, and the third was on foot. All three suffered multiple fractures and lay on the ground as Mustafa fled the wreckage of his burning car. He later reported the vehicle as stolen.
Nottinghamshire Police's forensic collision investigators determined that Mustafa had attempted to negotiate the bend at 85mph, far exceeding the temporary limit. He and another driver, who had been travelling in convoy, were tracked from the scene and arrested later that morning.
Evidence from Smart Glasses
A series of videos found on Mustafa's mobile phone, recorded by his own smart glasses, showed a pattern of dangerous driving. The footage captured him reaching 130mph on the M20 and speeding through a built-up area at 70mph. Although no footage of the collision was recovered, a pair of damaged smart glasses were found abandoned in his heavily damaged car.
Mustafa was breathalysed after his arrest, and alcohol was found in his system. In his first police interview, he claimed the collision had been caused when he braked sharply and was hit from behind, and that he was unaware anyone had been injured. However, evidence gathered during the investigation disproved this account.
Guilty Pleas and Sentencing
Mustafa, of Lindfield Road, Broxtowe, later pleaded guilty to three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice. He also admitted two further counts of dangerous driving relating to offences he recorded using his smart glasses.
At Nottingham Crown Court on Thursday, August 13, he was jailed for six-and-a-half years. He was also disqualified from driving for seven years and nine months, and will have to pass an extended retest.
Police Reaction and Co-Defendant
Following the sentencing, Detective Sergeant Charlotte Henson, from Nottinghamshire Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This young man was a serious collision waiting to happen. He clearly made a habit of driving in an aggressive, antisocial and dangerous manner before his luck finally ran out. When that happened, he was fortunate not to have killed any of the three victims he ploughed into. Unsurprisingly, this has been a very difficult ordeal for each of them and their families, and my thoughts are with them today. As Mustafa finally faces punishment for his actions, I hope this case serves as a reminder to other drivers about the potential consequences of driving in this way."
Reese Edwards, 28, of Bostocks Lane, Sandiacre, who was driving behind Mustafa at the time of the collision and also left the scene, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to drink-driving and failing to stop after a road accident. He was disqualified from driving for 20 months.
