Three women who were tragically found dead near Brighton Beach are understood to be relatives, according to family members. The victims, believed to be aged between their late teens and early 20s, were discovered in the water near Madeira Drive on the morning of Wednesday, May 13, after emergency services responded to concerns for a woman in the sea.
Family Confirms Relationship
A relative, reportedly based in Jamaica, expressed shock on social media, stating that the three women were her cousins. When asked if they were all from Jamaica, she replied that they were not. Reports suggest the women were from London and had been enjoying a night out before the tragedy. They were found fully clothed, according to the Daily Star.
Emergency crews, including a helicopter and lifeboats, arrived at around 5:45 AM before recovering the bodies. Sussex Police are reviewing CCTV footage from coastal cameras to determine the events leading to the incident. There are concerns the women may have been swept away after paddling into the sea and falling off a coastal shelf. Locals note that the seabed drops sharply near the shore, making it dangerous to venture too far out.
Investigation Underway
Police believe they have identified the women and are working with their families to formally confirm their identities. A spokesperson stated, "It would not be appropriate to publicly name the women before these procedures are completed. Their loved ones are being supported by specialist officers." The investigation is ongoing, but there is currently no evidence of third-party involvement or criminality.
Floral tributes have been left near the site by locals, including Eve Streeter, who described the tragedy as "shocking the whole city." She added, "The beach is a place of holiday and happiness, but every now and again we're reminded that it's brutal and dangerous."
Chief Superintendent Adam Hays expressed his condolences, saying, "This is an utterly heartbreaking tragedy, and my thoughts are with the loved ones of these three young women."
