The victim, described as an elderly Sikh gentleman by local councillor Parbinder Kaur, was rushed to hospital with serious injuries following the assault. A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody after officers were granted more time for questioning.
No Evidence of Hate Crime, Police Say
West Midlands Police have clarified that, based on information received so far, there is no evidence to suggest the attack was a hate crime. However, they are keeping an open mind as the investigation continues.
Councillor Kaur shared a statement with the community, emphasising the importance of accurate information. She said: "Please note that the terrible attack on an elderly Sikh gentleman in Smethwick has not been classified as a RACE HATE CRIME. Following discussions with the police, it has been confirmed that there is currently no evidence to suggest a RACIAL or RELIGIOUS motive linked to this incident."
Appeal for Calm and Respect
She added: "During these sensitive times, it is important that we provide accurate and verified information and avoid sharing unconfirmed reports that may cause unnecessary fear, concern, or friction within our communities. I would also respectfully ask people not to share videos or images of the attack out of respect for Uncle Ji and his family. Such content can be distressing for loved ones and may cause further upset within the community."
The councillor concluded: "I pray for his recovery as he remains in critical condition."
