A former RAF soldier has been jailed after stealing nearly £30,000 worth of belongings from friends and neighbours he cleaned for in Birmingham.
Daniel Jones, 34, of no fixed address, was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday, February 9, after admitting theft.
How the thefts were carried out
Jones targeted vulnerable people he knew, offering to clean their homes and then stealing items to sell for cash. His crimes took place between January and October 2023.
He stole jewellery, electrical items, and sentimental possessions from his victims, who trusted him to enter their homes. The total value of the stolen goods was estimated at nearly £30,000.
Police investigation and arrest
West Midlands Police launched an investigation after multiple victims reported missing items. Officers traced Jones and arrested him.
During questioning, Jones admitted the thefts. He was charged and later pleaded guilty to the offences.
Sentence and impact
At his sentencing, Jones was jailed for two years and eight months. He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge.
Detective Constable Sarah Jones, from West Midlands Police, said: “This was a despicable breach of trust. Daniel Jones used his position as a trusted cleaner to steal from vulnerable people who had welcomed him into their homes.”
She added: “I hope this sentence brings some closure to the victims and sends a clear message that this type of offending will not be tolerated.”
The victims have been supported by police and have been advised on how to claim compensation for their losses.
