West Midlands Fire Service is currently at the scene of a grassland fire at Ley Hill Park in Northfield, Birmingham, with around 20 firefighters working to bring the flames under control. The public has been advised to stay away from the area, and National Express West Midlands has diverted the number 18 bus service.
Fire crews respond to wildfire at Ley Hill Park
In a statement, West Midlands Fire Service said: "We have six crews in attendance at Ley Hill Park, Holloway, Northfield, where they have responded to a wildfire. Please avoid the area, where possible."
The fire was reported on Friday, 14 August 2026. The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed.
Bus diversions in place
National Express West Midlands announced: "Friday 14th August 2026 Holloway Northfield. 18 Diverting in both directions via Bristol Road South, Shenley Lane and Long Nuke Road due to an incident." Passengers are advised to check for updates on service changes.
Recent spate of fires in the region
This incident comes after a series of large fires affected Birmingham and the Black Country. On Thursday, 13 August, a major fire broke out at Stourbridge Golf Course in the Racecourse Lane area at 1.30pm. More than 100 firefighters, including 11 specialist teams, were deployed to tackle the blaze.
In an update at 3.30pm on Friday, Chief Fire Officer Simon Tuhill confirmed that the fire had engulfed 37 properties, of which 19 were completely destroyed and a further 18 sustained damage. The Stourbridge fire also led to a significant number of residents being displaced.
Fire services continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and follow safety advice during this period of increased fire risk.
