Andrew Woodward, 61, from Needwood, has been jailed for three years and three months at Stafford Crown Court after admitting causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving a motor vehicle when alcohol level above limit. The sentencing took place on Monday, October 5.
Crash on Rangemore Hill
Woodward drove his Lamborghini Huracan STO on Rangemore Hill, south of Needwood in Staffordshire, at 121mph on Sunday, August 3 last year. At the time, he was more than double the legal alcohol limit.
Despite pleas from his passenger, Woodward continued at high speed and eventually lost control of the car in Burton-on-Trent. The vehicle hit street furniture and a roundabout, which caused it to go airborne before landing in a field.
Serious injuries and investigation
Both Woodward and his female passenger suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospital following the crash.
Sergeant Christopher Sweetmore led the investigation for Staffordshire Police. He said: “Woodward had consumed alcohol and drove at an incredible speed in his performance sports car. He treated public roads like a racetrack and drove at speeds that terrified his passenger. It is only through sheer luck, rather than judgment, that we were not dealing with a fatality that evening.”
Judgment and consequences
The case highlights the dangers of excessive speed and drink driving on rural roads. Woodward's actions resulted in serious harm to himself and his passenger, as well as a significant prison sentence.
Staffordshire Police have not released further details about the passenger's current condition or any additional penalties imposed by the court.
