Man Admits Pushing Dad into Path of Ambulance

A 22-year-old man has pleaded guilty to killing a father-of-two by pushing him into the path of an oncoming ambulance in a late-night incident that shocked the local community.

Fatal Incident on Corran Esplanade

Lewis Budge, now aged 22, admitted to culpable homicide when he appeared at the High Court in Glasgow on Wednesday, January 21, 2026. The court heard how Budge, who was 20 at the time of the offence, pushed 39-year-old Robert Bromell into the road on the A85 at Corran Esplanade in Oban, Argyll and Bute.

The tragic event occurred at approximately 1.35am on September 6, 2023. Moments after being pushed, Mr Bromell was struck by an ambulance. He was rushed to hospital with serious injuries but sadly died the following day.

Police Response and Community Impact

Inspector Gerry Shovlin of Police Scotland addressed the case, stating: "Our thoughts remain with Robert's family and friends, who have suffered a devastating loss. While no outcome can undo what happened, I hope this guilty plea brings some measure of comfort to them."

He further emphasised: "This was a shocking and senseless attack. Violence such as this is never acceptable in our communities. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure those responsible are brought to justice."

Family Tribute to Robert Bromell

In a heartfelt statement, Mr Bromell's family paid tribute to him, describing how he was never seen 'without a smile on his face and a little joke to tell'. They expressed their profound grief, saying: "It is a devastating loss and he will be missed by everyone that knew him. He was a loving dad to his two sons and an amazing brother. As a family we are devastated and truly heartbroken right now. Life will not be the same without him."

The family's words highlight the personal tragedy behind the legal proceedings, painting a picture of a beloved family man whose life was cut short.

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

Budge's admission of guilt at the High Court marks a significant development in the case. The plea to culpable homicide, which is the Scottish legal equivalent of manslaughter, acknowledges responsibility for causing Mr Bromell's death through unlawful actions.

Sentencing has been deferred to a later date, allowing for the preparation of reports that will inform the judge's decision on an appropriate punishment. The court will consider all factors of the case before determining Budge's fate.

This case serves as a sobering reminder of the devastating consequences that can result from violent actions, particularly in community settings where such behaviour is completely unacceptable.
