A Stoke-on-Trent man has been imprisoned following a vicious assault on his ex-partner that left the victim so terrified she was forced to flee her own home through a window to escape further violence.
Brutal Assault in Norton Home
Ammar Khan, aged 27 and residing on Queen's Avenue in Tunstall, launched the attack at his former partner's residence on Barks Drive in Norton during the evening of July 2 last year. The court heard how Khan, who shares a child with the victim following their five-year relationship, arrived uninvited between 8pm and 9pm.
Prosecutor Nick Tatlow detailed how the confrontation began when Khan seized the woman's mobile phone. "They argued. He accused her of seeing someone else. He lost his temper and stamped on her thigh," Mr Tatlow told Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court.
Violent Escalation and Desperate Escape
The situation rapidly deteriorated into a sustained physical assault. As the victim stood up and attempted to retreat, she fell to the floor. Khan proceeded to punch her in the face, striking the wrist she raised in self-defence. He then stamped on her shin, grabbed her hair, and kicked her, inflicting what was described as "horrendous pain."
After a brief pause where Khan attempted to apologise, the violence resumed. He struck her back and delivered three further kicks to her legs. Seizing a moment when Khan was distracted by looking through her phone, the terrified woman made her desperate escape by climbing out of a window. Khan subsequently left the scene in his car.
Court Sentencing and Previous Convictions
Khan pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm. At his sentencing hearing, the court was informed he has five previous convictions for ten offences, including a prior conviction for assault occasioning actual bodily harm in 2021 and an affray conviction in 2022.
Recorder Robert Smith addressed Khan directly during sentencing, stating: "You were not welcome at her house. You went around, you took her phone, you went through it and accused her of being with other men. You set about her, punched her to her wrist, kicked her, and stamped on her while she was on the floor. She was forced to flee via a window to escape you and your violence. For this nasty and unpleasant offence, immediate custody is inevitable."
Mitigation and Final Sentence
Defence counsel James Kumar told the court that Khan had expressed remorse and regret for his actions. Despite this mitigation, Recorder Smith imposed a prison sentence of 46 weeks. As Khan had already served this time on remand while awaiting trial, the sentence led to his immediate release from custody.
In addition to the prison term, the court issued a restraining order that prohibits Khan from contacting his victim for a period of ten years, providing long-term protection following the traumatic incident.
