A man has been sentenced to prison for committing a lewd act in close proximity to a children's play area in a Peterborough neighbourhood.
Blatant Act Witnessed by Public
Gary Smith, aged 52, was arrested after police discovered him lying down with his trousers and belt undone near the Grove Street play area in Fletton. Officers were called to the scene on July 31 last year following a report from a member of the public who witnessed what they described as 'absolutely disgusting' behaviour.
History of Restrictions Ignored
The incident was a clear breach of a criminal behaviour order (CBO) imposed on Smith. This order explicitly prohibited him from attending public parkland or gardens and remains in force until 2029. Smith initially admitted to breaching the CBO but denied a charge of outraging public decency.
However, during a hearing at Cambridge Crown Court on January 14, Smith changed his plea to guilty on the second count of outraging public decency.
Court Outcome and Police Statement
Smith, who is of no fixed address, was subsequently jailed for 22 months. Following the sentencing, PC Millie Pinguenet of Cambridgeshire Constabulary commented on the case.
"Smith’s behaviour was blatant and absolutely disgusting," PC Pinguenet stated. "He knew the criteria of his CBO but simply chose to ignore them. I’m pleased he has appeared in court and been jailed for his actions."
The case highlights the continued enforcement of community safety measures and the legal consequences for those who violate court orders designed to protect the public.
